2006 worldwide mobile phones sales figures

IT News Online reported that worldwide mobile phone sales surpassed 990.8 million units in 2006.

According to Gartner Inc., worldwide mobile phone sales surpassed 990.8 million units in 2006, a 21.3% increase from 2005 when sales reached 816.6 million units. Gartner said this high volume was partly in preparation for the Chinese New Year, but also the result of some manufacturers introducing products late in the quarter.

Nokia accounted for 34.8% of total market share, with Motorola and Samsung a far second and third, with 21.1% and 11.8% respectively. Sony Ericsson was in fourth place with 7.4% and LG was in fifth place with 6.3%.

Summarizing 2006, the best selling phone of the year was Motorola Razr V3/V3i/V3c, followed by Sony
Ericsson K790i/K800i and Sony Ericsson W810i. – We have had very high demand for the Razr V3/V3i/V3c during 2006 and K790i/K800i. Both phones are two good examples when the mobile phone producers have succeeded to develop a high-end phone with a very long product life cycle say Ulf Sandberg, CEO at Krusell International AB.

The Swedish manufacturer of carrying cases for portable electronics, Krusell, has released their "Top 10"-list for 2006. The list is based upon the number of pieces of model specific mobile and smart phone cases that have been ordered from Krusell during 2006. Krusell's list is unique due to the fact that it reflects the sales of phones on six continents and in more than
50 countries around the globe.
